"Bring the Community to Schools" Webinar

Education Week is hosting a webinar highlighting the community school model. The webinar – Bring the Community to Schools – will focus on the unique opportunities that community schools offer for children, families and community residents. Based on the vision that schools can provide support and opportunities for all residents, the community school strategy involves creating partnerships between the school and local organizations to meet the needs of students and the community. For example, community schools may provide a range of services, including: breakfast and dinner, early-childhood programs, after-school programming, health centers and adult education classes. Community schools turn school buildings into hubs of neighborhood activity, which allows residents to interact with one another and access a variety of services and programs that may otherwise be difficult for residents to get to, particularly in low-income communities.

The “Bring the Community to Schools” webinar will highlight the Schools Uniting Communities (SUN) network in Portland, Oregon. With 64 community schools in the Portland area, the SUN Community School model has seen great success in improving student academic growth and meeting unique needs of the families and residents that live in the local community.

This webinar is a great opportunity for communities interested in developing a community school strategy to learn about the critical work that the SUN network is doing and receive practical guidance about how to best develop an effective model. The webinar will take place on Tuesday, March 27th from 2-3pm ET. To register for the webinar, please click here.
